While modern VANAC watches aren't quite as whimsical, they still retain their iconic hour markers, especially the one at 12 o'clock, reminiscent of a pharaoh's headdress. This modern feel makes them more suited to urban color schemes, hence the three new models are all inspired by Tokyo's traffic system.
The "Tokyo Expressway" series comes in three colors: Twilight Purple, Silver, and Night Black, each capturing the changing colors of the megacity's expressways at night. Of these three colors, I'd most like to see more of the silver version. The purple version is softer than previous VANAC watches, especially considering its less aggressive horizontal lines. This watch has a 41mm diameter case made of multi-faceted titanium, with polished curves complementing the brushed surfaces. It's easy to imagine that this was once an experimental product line for Seiko. Even today, it remains one of the most eye-catching watches in its price range.

This doesn't mean the King Seiko VANAC "Tokyo Road" series is a low-end product. Priced at £3400, it falls precisely between Seiko and Grand Seiko. King Seiko is often jokingly referred to as the "middle child" for this reason. But don't mistake it for a compromise. With its robust case and more modern urban style, the King Seiko possesses a distinct personal style, and the "Tokyo Road" trilogy makes it even more comfortable and versatile to wear.
