American curator Melissa Harris has caused a stir by presenting the work of photographers Elena Dorfman and Jamie Diamond at the Fondazione Prada in Milan.
Dolls are one of the oldest known toys and have captured the human imagination for thousands of years. In Ancient Egypt, puppets were recorded as early as the 21st century B.C., while in Greece, the appearance of clay dolls dates back to at least 200 B.C. Of course, dolls are not just children's toys, but also objects of spiritual, familial and supernatural value. The line between past and present has blurred.
Sex Dolls Through the Lens of Photographers
An exhibition on the theme of “Substitutes for Love” explores these blurred boundaries. At the Fondazione Prada in Milan, the exhibition features 42 works by contemporary American photographers Jamie Diamond and Elena Dorfman, which capture the lives of a range of individuals, from female artists to sex doll enthusiasts, as well as their emotional engagement with sex dolls.
But photographers' use of dolls as props or objects is nothing new; in the mid-20th century, Boston artist Morton Bartlett photographed plaster dolls. In recent years, Laurie Simmons, Elizabeth Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Ovid Bistowin have added, “He's known for taking anthropomorphic portraits.”
Curator Melissa Harris told Vogue, “I love Jamie and Elena's work because their vision and work is very human.” As a contributing editor at the foundation, Harris said she was drawn to the two photographers' work and saw it as an opportunity for conversation, “to see how they interacted, what they had in common, and what they had in common in other ways.”
The exhibition features Diamond's series Eternal Mothers (2012-2018), which presents intimate “reborn” images created by self-taught female artists who handcraft, collect, and interact with hyper-realistic sexdolls usa. The reasons for these women's obsessions vary, but most have to do with a form of “empty nest syndrome”. The photographs capture tender moments between the protagonists and the sex dolls that are both sympathetic and cryptic. Diamond says, “Working with the team allowed me to explore the gray area between reality and technology, where relationships are built through inanimate objects.”
In Nine Months Reborn (2014), the 35-year-old Brooklyn-based artist utilizes Cindy Sherman's unique compositional techniques to portray herself as the main character. The intriguing series depicts Diamond in a bobbed wig, strolling with a sex doll named Annabelle through a variety of social settings, from restaurant patios to trains to swimming pools. The works are inspired by the artist's own childhood and are named after her diary. They explore how girls develop specific attitudes towards motherhood through socialization, while echoing the artist's exploration of community.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles-based artist Elena Dorfman works with dolls as alternatives to romantic relationships and sexual companionship. In her series Still in Love (2001-2004), the 54-year-old artist documents the domestic lives of men and women who desire to make life-size and mature sex dolls. “Making dolls is really exciting because I've never seen anything like it,” Dorfman says. “People who like to use dolls instead of real people, past and present, are very appealing to me.”
While the photographs in the exhibit do show a deep sense of humanity, it is thought that they represent people who are already living on the margins of society. Harris explains, “I have no intention of making up stories, exploiting anyone, or further marginalizing groups of people who are already marginalized and judged.” Both artists have gotten to know their respective groups intimately, earned their trust, and spent a great deal of time with the subjects depicted.
As our relationship with AI technology comes under unprecedented scrutiny, Alternatives to Love presents a vision of humanity that is both timely and timeless. While this two-way conversation fully explores the blowjob sex doll as an emotional attachment substitute
